Types of Ambigrams

Rotational
A design that presents several instances of words when rotated through a fixed angle. This is usually 180 degrees, but rotational ambigrams of other angles exist, for example 90 or 45 degrees.
The 180 degerees rotational Ambigram is the commonest form of Ambigram and is often called “Inversion”

Reflection
A design that can be read when reflected or viewed through a mirror, usually as the same word or phrase both ways, but not always. Reflection can be along a Horizontal or a Vertical Axis.

Figure/Ground
A design in which the spaces between the letters of one word form another word.

Containment
Any word where part of which is made up of another word. Self-Containment refers to a word which contains one or more copies of itself.

Chain
A design where a word (or sometimes words) are interlinked forming a repeating chain.Sometimes chain ambigrams are presented in the form of a circle. Extensions of the 'chain'-type ambigram are The Web and Space-Filling. In the former the letters are woven together on more than one plane like a mesh or tapestry, while Space-filling which is nothing but tiling the chain ambigrams to fill the 2-dimensional plane.

3-dimensional
A design where an object is presented that will appear to read several letters or words when viewed from different angles.

Perceptual shift or Oscilation
A design with no symmetry but can be read as two different words depending on how the curves of the letters are interpreted.

Spinonym
A word that is made up of only one shape; the single glyphis rotated and reflected to form each individual letter.

Swap
A design where two halves of a word are swapped and form a different word.

Natural
A natural ambigram is a word that possesses one or more of the above symmetries when written in its natural state, and requiring no typographic styling. For example the words "pod", "suns" and "solos" are natural rotational ambigrams while the word "bud" is a natural reflection(horizontal) ambigram..
